Fairmount HouseProperty, setting and location:
Enjoy "a taste of something special" in the tranquillity, warmth and informal atmosphere of this Small Hotel of Character. Fairmount House was built in 1900 as a family home, complete with servants' quarters and cellars. Conversion to flats in the 1950's threatened much of its character, but it has been lovingly restored and revitalised by its owners since, recapturing much of its original warm and welcoming family atmosphere.

Set above picturesque Cockington Valley, away from the bustle of the town, Fairmount is a haven for the 'discerning' visitor, who seeks a peaceful setting for a holiday. On a south-facing hillside, Fairmount House, with its mature gardens and sun-filled patios, overlooks the quiet, residential valley of Chelston, with distant views towards Brixham across the bay, yet Torquay Harbour lies within easy reach and the sea is less than a mile away.

Close by is the famous beauty spot of Cockington Village and Country Park. In the village square is the 14th century thatched forge, while behind lies Cockington Court with its acres of gentle parkland, ancient church, woodland walks and peaceful setting. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, it is a must at any time of the year, but the Camelias, Azaleas and Rhododendrons in the spring are a sight not to be missed.

The area is rich in historical background with castles, churches and museums to visit, and several National Trust Houses and Gardens lie within easy motoring distance. Many of our regular visitors spend time exploring the grandeur of Dartrmoor National Park, either up on the high country with its granite tors, or down in the wooded river valleys beside the streams. An unforgettable experience. Close by are miles of glorious coastal path, with new vistas opening up around each headland and a profusion of sea birds to watch.

Guest rooms, facilities and the garden:
All eight bedrooms, singles, doubles and triples, are tastefully furnished, clean and comfortable. They all have en-suite bathrooms or shower and toilet. Remote-control colour TV, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer, clock radio and heating are provided, together with special touches, that make all the difference. An additional single bed can be provided on request.

The two garden rooms on the lower ground floor, one of which has a Four Poster double bed, have corner baths and their own private doors opening direct onto their own furnished patios and the garden - perfect for families, wheelchair-users and guests, who bring their dogs.

All the major rooms face south over the sloping lawns, where for the Spring visitor, there is the magnificent sight of the ancient Magnolia tree in blossom. The beautiful garden is a joyful blaze of colour throughout the season and is a regular Award Winner in 'Torbay in Bloom'.

The lounge with its sunny balcony is a restful room where an open log fire burns on cooler evenings.

South-facing over the secluded garden, the Victorian Conservatory Bar is a delightful spot to enjoy a quiet drink at the end of the day. French doors open onto the patio, which is a sheltered sun-trap during the day and a relaxing spot on warm summer evenings.
